Tips for speaking in public
Know the room you are going to deliver your speech in. Be there early so that you can walk around the speaking area and practice using the microphone and any visual aids.
Know the needs of your audience and match your contents to their needs. Listen to the questions they ask carefully and answer accordingly. If they ask you a question doesn’t tell them about your doggy who gave birth three days ago...unless that is what your speech is about.
Body language is important. It is said that only 7% of communication is talking the other 93% of communication consists of body language.
Nothing will ever replace rehearsal. Rehearse your speech until you know it so well that it irritates you and you want to throw it away. Most of the time when we stress about something like a test or speech it is because we don’t know our material well enough.
Realize that people want you to succeed. The reason why these people are there to listen to you is because they are interested in what you have to say, and they want it to be inspiring, funny and interesting because if its not they feel that they could just as well be put in a torture chamber.
Add humour whenever appropriate and possible. Everyone loves the odd joke and especially if it is added to a boring business presentation because that is what makes it interesting. Make sure that your joke is appropriate for the type of presentation you are doing, your drunken bar jokes will certainly not be.
If you do find yourself becoming overcome with anxiety during a speech, all is not lost. Take a brief moment to collect your thoughts and relax because it is not as bad as you think.
Gain experience. Mainly, your speech should represent you and your opinion and your views on the subject, this is after all what the people are there for to hear the opinion of other people.
